Two-Year Colleges: A Great Alternative to a Four-Year Institution

For at least four decades the conventional wisdom has been that as many high school graduates as possible should go on to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college. A bachelor's degree has been the ticket to entry into high-paying professional careers, and many corporations haven't allowed workers onto the first rung of their professional ladder without that degree. Two-year colleges are often looked upon more as vocational schools, and have traditionally been considered the stepsister of four-year institutions, suitable for those without the academic record to get into a "regular" college.

A lot has changed. As college tuition costs have spiked, many students leave a four-year college with a bachelor's degree and a whopping student loan debt, often in excess of $50,000. And with the realization that a four-year degree is no guarantee of a job related to their field of study, many students are opting out of the four-year school and into a two-year program.

Two-year colleges require students to complete certain general requirements, including English and math courses, just like their four-year counterparts, but the emphasis in a two-year college is work-oriented knowledge and the development of practical skills. Participants can earn Associate Degrees in a wide range of majors including accounting, business management, communications, information technology, and programs to prepare students for a variety of medically related professions.

Many programs, while set up to be completed in two years, can also be extended in a three-year timeline, allowing students to work part- or fulltime and pursue their education. There's also a clear path to advancement with some programs; students can opt for additional training at the same college. A program preparing a student for work as a physical therapy or occupational therapy assistant may also offer advanced programs leading to qualification as a licensed physical therapist. It's also possible in many cases to transfer credits from the two-year college to a four-year college.

One- and two-year technical schools, many of them private, for-profit institutions, have sprung up all over country offering training for a long list of different careers. Some caution is encouraged here: Many of the for-profit schools promise career placement after graduation, and fail to follow through. The curriculum can vary from school to school as well; before a student decides on a particular school which promises to prepare for a specific career, it's advisable to research the educational requirement of that particular position and then make sure that the school's curriculum offers all the training needed.

Of course, a public, state-supported, nonprofit two-year college or vocational school is a pretty safe bet. It has the advantages of stability, community involvement, and most likely a good sense of what kinds of training are needed in the surrounding business environment. A community college can probably also offer trustworthy advice on the availability of scholarships, loans, and other types of student aid.

For prospective students with a clear idea of the career they want to pursue, two-year colleges offer a relatively fast, and often less expensive, alternative to a four-year program. No longer considered "Plan B" for students not able to swing a bachelor's degree program, they're becoming a savvy alternative for anyone seeking professional education.

Rehabilitation Therapy Instruction for Natural Healing

Seeking a professional and personally rewarding career helping people heal themselves? Perhaps becoming a qualified rehabilitation therapist might be an option for you. Natural Healing schools offer educational programs that prepare students in becoming licensed occupational, rehabilitation and physical therapists; and applicable fields of work.

Prior to enrolling in a rehabilitation therapy school, (term is commonly interchanged with physical therapy and occupational therapy schools) individuals should take high school courses in art, biology, chemistry, health, physics and social sciences; as these are often prerequisites for rehabilitation therapy school entry.

Accredited rehabilitation therapy learning institutions provide comprehensive curriculums that cover behavioral and social sciences; biology; computer science; human anatomy; medical terminology; physics; relevant electives; and other related continuing education coursework.

According to the US Department of Labor ‘…122 master’s degree programs offered entry-level education…’ with ‘…65 programs offering a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree, and 5 offering an entry-level doctoral degree.’ [1] Based on this information, rehabilitation therapy school students will have to attain a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an accredited occupational or rehabilitation therapy school program in order to become a practicing therapist. In addition to successfully completing and graduating from an accredited rehabilitation therapy institution, candidates must pass a national certification examination to attain professional license.

With more and more patients willing to try alternative healing methods, occupational and physical therapy is expected to rapidly increase, students who wish to attain an education for this particular career can anticipate long term and stable employment opportunities.

Professional Certifications from a Natural Healing School

If you are seeking a career helping others to help themselves, professional certification from a natural healing school may be just the answer! Pre-Algebra Help

Pre algebra is the subject you need to understand before moving on to learn algebra. In other terms, you can say that pre algebra is the perfect platform from where you can move on to algebra. However, we will talk about pre algebra as a separate entity here. Let us have a look at the key topics of pre algebra you must know:

Negative numbers

Learn basic facts of adding, subtracting or multiplying negative numbers. For example, always remember:

• If both numbers have the same sign, the product is positive.
• If the numbers have different signs, the product is negative.

Adding odd and even numbers

Here, just remember:

• Even Number + Even Number = Even Number.
• Odd Number + Odd Number = Even Number.
• Even Number + Odd Number = Odd Number

Decimal numbers

While adding or subtracting decimal numbers, always place the numbers so that the decimal points are vertically aligned. For example, 6.231 + 0.044 = 6.275.

While multiplying decimal numbers, multiply like you multiply whole numbers. Then add the decimal places in both numbers to find the position of the decimal point in the product.

While dividing, move the decimal point in the divisor to the right as necessary to make the divisor a whole number. Then the decimal point in the dividend is moved to the right the same number of places. The decimal point in the answer is placed just above the decimal point in the dividend. These facts are vital in pre algebra.

Square Root

To learn square roots, remember the following formulas:

• Every positive real number n has two square roots
• Product Property: For all positive real numbers a and b,
• Quotient Property: For all positive real numbers a and b,

Reducing to lowest factors

Divide the top and the bottom by the same prime numbers until no more common prime number can be found.

e.g, 24/36 =4/6=2/3

Converting mixed number to improper fraction

In this, remember the following formula:

Converting improper fraction to mixed number

Divide the denominator into the numerator. The whole part of the answer is the whole part of the mixed number. The remainder will be the numerator of the fraction of the mixed number.

Finally, just learn these topics and practice them as much as possible. With time you will surely master pre algebra, which will lay a good foundation for your algebra classes.

Water Wisdom

That our local (Canberra, Australia) community is considering building a new dam is a sad reflection on generations of government inaction, and individual indifference. Governments have taken little action to promote water conservation, even positively discouraging citizens from installing water tanks until comparatively recently.

As individuals, we've been seduced by a couple of hundred years of almost free water available at the turn of a tap. This pattern has been repeated through much of the industrialized world. Throughout our world, we're faced with falling dam levels, depleted aquifers, and rising consumption. Whatever the outcome of the debate about climate change, simple population growth in almost every region is sufficient to create a continuing upward pressure on water demand. We're considering new dams, desalination plants and more, to deal with our water supply shortfall.

If we're going to need a new dam or desalination plant at some point, the question is when, and how soon will we have to go through the whole process again? The answer to that depends on actions we take as a community, and as individuals, to change the way we use, collect and reuse water. The more we can do at an individual level, the longer we can put off the the need for expensive infrastructure- projects that often have unfortunate environmental consequences. What can we do?

There are three obvious areas where we can act effectively as individuals.

- cut our water use

- catch and use as much rainwater as possible on our block

- re-use as much water as possible before it leaves our block.

Reducing Water Use.

There are a whole lot of habits that can be changed, like running the water while brushing our teeth or peeling the potatoes, or our quaint attachment to lawns best suited to the English climate. The average family even wastes something like 20,000 litres (4,500 gal.) of water a year while waiting for the hot tap to produce hot water! In addition to our ability to reduce water use by changing habits, there are many products that can be installed that can make a dramatic difference to water consumption.

- tap washer replacement valves and aerator taps can dramatically lower water use

- good low-flow showerheads can save the average family over 40,000 litres (9,000 gal.) a year

- installing new dual-flush toilets can slash water use by tens of thousands of litres a year

- hot water recirculators can make dramatic savings

Catching And Using Rainwater On Our Block.

An average home with a total roof area of 160m2 (1720 sq. ft.) has the potential to collect around 80,000 litres (18,000 gal.) a year if the annual rainfall is around 500mm (20"). That's water than can go on the garden, flush toilets, run washing machines, or even supply a whole house. Every case is different, but there's almost no home that can't make a big dent in it's water usgae by installing water tanks. Happily, many government and municipal bodies now provides rebates to assist homeowners install tanks. In a pioneering deal with a local land developer, our company is supplying over 1,000 compact water tanks to homes in their developments that flush the toilets with rainwater, not drinking water. An average family could see 20,000 litres (4,500 gal.) a year come off their water bill. There is a lot we can do to catch and use rainwater.

Re-Using Grey Water On Our Block.

This is the big one. It's normally allowed that 150-200 litres (35-45 gal.) of wastewater per person per day leaves our homes. That's 600-800 litres a day for a four-member family, or 219-292,000 litres (50-65,000 gal.) a year! Something around 25% of that is 'black water'. The majority of black water comes from the toilet, and obviously shoudn't be used. The balance of the water we don't want to reuse comes from the kitchen. Because of the fats and organic material that goes down the kitchen sink, it's wise to exclude kitchen water from our calculations. That still leaves a huge volume of usable water leaving our blocks, around 150-220,000 litres (40-50,000 gal.) a year.

Until recently, there has been no convenient, affordable way of reusing grey water on our gardens. Sure, you could always run a hose from the washing machine, or have a bucket in the shower with you to catch some of that water. You could buy a diverter valve for a few tens of dollars. For those with money to burn, you could spend thousands of dollars on anything from amateurish inventions, to a domestic aerated watewater treatment system. We had choices that were convenient, but not affordable, or affordable choices that weren't convenient. As a businessman of many years experience, I knew that the market was there, just waiting for the right product at an affordable price. A few months ago, we found it.

Newly developed products on the market mean that the average household can now do most of its garden watering with a reasonably-priced grey water reuse system. For the Australian market, we are shipping a compact system called the eco-Care Grey Water Diverter System. The eco-Care has a pump that automatically sends grey water to the garden as it is produced. It also has a timer that automatically engages every 24 hours, which ensures that the grey water leaves the system before it has a chance to turn into black water. The price is A$879- equivalent to around US$650 at today's exchange rate. That's definitely affordable for the mass market, and customer interest and sales have been excellent.

A few words of caution. Grey water systems are a 'grey area'. There are a number of issues to be considered if we want a grey water system to give the best results.

- attitude of local authorities. These bodies are responsible for plumbing standards, and health matters. Some are progressive, some are firmly stuck in the past.

- health issues. Ideally, grey water should be reticulated underground to avoid human contact, and not come in contact with any vegetables or fruit.

- filtration issues. Water from the laundry contains lint. Water from the bathroom contains hair. Both can block up distribution pipes with small holes.

- chemistry issues. The soaps and detergents we use produce grey water that is alkaline. The degree of alkalinity varies greatly from product to product. Chose products with low sodium and phosphorus levels. Why? Because different plants prefer different acid-alkaline (pH) balances. Putting highly alkaline water on acid-loving plants iwon't get the result you want.

While keeping the issues of the last paragraph in mind, grey water reuse offers a wonderful opportunity for us to maintain the sort of gardens we want, without wastinga single drop of precious drinking water.

We are just one of many good businesses that can help customers dramatically reduce their water needs. While governments are doing some good things, and could do more, it's now up to us as individuals. If we continue 'business as usual', then we must get used to building (and paying for) new dams and infrastructure. Watch those taxes rise. The most responsible course is to change the way we act, and our the way our homes operate, to reduce our need for water from outside our block. If we come up with the wrong answers, including doing nothing, our children will be paying those dam bills forever!

The 9 Commonest Mistakes That Students Make When Sitting Exams

If you are not sitting exams right now keep this until you need it or pass this on to someone else.

Each of these mistakes really happens, so I am sure some have happened to you own friends. Exams are very stressful times and people make easy mistakes. Don't fall for them!

General Advice : Get in the habit of doing everything slowly and carefully with anything to do for exams and with your mind in the 'here and now' and fully switched on.

1) Not turning up or turning up to the wrong exam or the wrong place

PROBLEM: Although it may seem amazing year after year, an unlucky student 'forgets' about the exam, thinks it is the next day or the morning instead of the afternoon. I am sure that you are 'way too good' to make this mistake.

SOLUTION: Take the time to review on several occasions with your brain 'switched on' your exam timetable, and even review it with someone else. Do not rely on what your friend thinks or even what you think! Only believe in written down black and white ! Double-check for yourself with the original information. Review it on Saturday morning a week before the start of the exam and then every morning when you get up or before you go to sleep. Make sure you are certain where the exam will be held - don't assume!

2) Turning up with the wrong equipment

PROBLEM: The exam assumes that you have a calculator with you, but you didn't bring yours! You either waste time trying to borrow one, but the person you borrow it from is going to need it too, or you try and make do. Neither very satisfactory!

SOLUTION: Check what you are allowed to take into an exam and make sure that you have all the equipment neccessary one week before you will need it. If you can have two of everything - at worst you will be very popular with any friend that is not so organized as you!

3) Missing out parts of the exam

PROBLEM: Out of 100 students several will miss parts of the exam by mistake.

SOLUTION: Go through the paper backwords at the very start of the exam starting from the back page so you can see where every question is and make sure that you have identified all the questions. ie if you have to choose 2 out of 6 questions to answer make sure that you have read all 6 questions.

4) Doing 'all' the questions when only say 3 out of 5 are asked for.

PROBLEM: Students will answer all the questions when only some are needed.

SOLUTION: Read the instructions carefully and slowly. Do not think you know it. It might have changed from exams you have had before.

If you are a brilliant student who writes really fast there is not a problem here. For the rest of us you have spent only 60% of available time answering questions that will be marked. The other 40% of your time you have completely wasted on answering questions that will not be marked. Chances are the examiners will choose the first, not the best. If you are not sure how many questions should be answered ask!

5) Getting the numbering out of order

PROBLEM: This nightmare can happen when you take questions out of order. However in order to use your time efficiently you sometimes have to do this.

SOLUTION: Always speak the number of the question to yourself when you are answering it. Double check every question and answer especially in multiple choice questions

6) Spending too much time answering one question.

PROBLEM: Even if you write a brilliant thesis on one question if the total marks available is only 20 out of an exam of 100 marks that is the most you can get.

SOLUTION: In general make sure that you allocate time according to the marks available. If you have time left over you can come back and add points.

7) Not making enough points in short notes or essays to get the marks available.

PROBLEM:If a part of a question is for 5 marks, You must say at least 5 seperate thing if you want to get all the marks assuming there is one mark for each point. If you only say two things you will only get two points. If you say five things, you must have read the examiners mind and know exactly what he wants to get 5 marks.

SOLUTION: In a short notes question like what were the reasons why...(5 marks) try to come up with 7 reasons, if you can, that way you can get one or two 'wrong' and still get full marks (check with your teacher that this will work). If you are given 5 lines to write on, then just give 5 and hope for the best. Similarly if an essay is for 25 marks then you must make at least 25 seperate different sentences about the question to have a hope of getting all the marks - far better to make too many than too few.

8) Not answering what is asked.

PROBLEM: This is dreadful - you work hard you do a great job but the examiner will be forced to give only a few marks or maybe zero because you have not read the question properly.

SOLUTION: Take your time reading every question. Take it one--word--at--a--time--real--slow--like. Read it again. Go though it backwards with one finger under each word if there are say only 5 essay questions. Underline each important word. Then read again forwards. Reading the question is not the place to rush or whizz through.

9) Getting stressed out because the first question is really difficult

PROBLEM: I once got stuck on a question that took me 1 1/2 hours in a 2 1/2 hour exam. I then had 1 hour to do 4 more questions!

SOLUTION: I've left the best till last this is really the single best idea for any exam:- Let your backbrain do the work.

Read one question, if you do not really know the answer well, leave it (without allowing yourself to be stressed!) and move to the next. Keep going until you find one you know all about. If you don't find the easy question - no matter!- go back through to the beginning of the exam paper again and find your 'least bad' question.

In the few minutes during which you have gone through the paper the question will have gone into you brain and the back brain will have done some work so you have a better chance of coming up with the answer. If you just look at the question waiting for the answer to come you can stress out and make a perfectly fine question seem like its been set in a totally different language! Let your back brain do the work -it keeps your stress levels low.

This report helps make sure that you perform at your best in the exam room.

In order that you do your best you need to be organized and use your time wisely.

Good luck with your exams.

How Should You Wear Your Civil War Uniforms Slouch Hat

Small features like how you wear your slouch hat will enhance your Civil War uniform impression – without spending another dime. If you look at original photographs, you will discover that Civil War soldiers wore the brim up. The Indiana Jones brim turned down cannot be found in photographs of the period.

Common colors of slouch hats were black, silver gray, brown and tan. Any felt hat of the period will do. Generally speaking, they wore their hats on their heads. Sometimes they cocked it off to one side – but they did not push it back.

Men of the Victorian period wore their hats all the time when they were outside – unless they were taking them off as a sign of respect. Winter or summer – they wore their hats. Wheel hats and straw hats were also worn in the summer. I found I could not find many photographs of winter hats. My theory is that the cold temperatures interfered with the chemical reaction in the photography development.

I try to stay away from anything fancy on my hat. Hat brass, cords, pinning the side of the hat up would be the exception to the rule. I believe generic is the best. A generic felt hat with a medium size brim worn wither with a flat or bee hive top possibly with some type of crease or the hat tilted off to the side is what I have observed in photographs most often. Wearing the brim up was the rage during that time period

5 Tips on Cleaning Your Civil War Uniform

How necessary is cleaning your Civil War Uniform?

The every day Confederate or Union soldier’s uniform was actually never made to be washed. They wore out so fast that many of them were never cleaned - ever.

This leaves us with the question –

Do you really need to wash or dry clean your Civil War uniform?

Some reasons for cleaning a uniform may be

1. To prevent it from smelling really bad.

(Some hardcore reenactors feel that smelling really bad is really part of the mystique? What do you think about having an “authentic smell?)

2. To prevent the various body chemicals that the uniform can absorb or acquire like sweat, body oils, from destroying the integrity of the fabric.

3. To have your uniform look good.

4. To do some type of seasonal, yearly, monthly maintenance to preserve your uniform.

So, considering all of these things, if you still want to clean your uniform, here are my suggestions.

1. Do as little as possible. Less is better.

2. Jackets, pants, and vests (wool/jean cloth) - None of mine have ever been laundered.

3. What I do is I put them outside on the porch on a hanger and let them air out.

4. If I want to get some of the dirt out, I use a nice stiff brush and brush the dirt out of it.

(A stiff hairbrush works fine.)

5. If you still really want to clean it, I would suggest soaking it in cold plain water

with some type of wool fabric cleaner like Woolite.

Natural Healing Schools

Natural healing schools offer instruction about natural and holistic medicine. A natural healing school usually includes a curriculum based on natural remedies comprised of courses on nutritional and herbal supplements; as well as various massage and other self healing therapies.

Teaching a foundation on the human body’s ability to heal itself; natural healing schools may offer instructional courses that cover iridology, Ayurveda, alternative therapies, colonic hydrotherapy, detoxification, nutritional habits, reflexology, essential oils and flower essences and other relevant, healing therapies.

In general, natural healing schools offer an education in natural medicine through comprehensive study programs that integrate herbal medicines with other naturopathic and homeopathic treatments. Other possible courses which natural healing schools may offer include aromatherapy, body treatments, various massage therapies, energy balancing techniques, business essentials, and reiki.

Natural healing school courses range in length and cost; however, if individuals wish to pursue specific healing modality training such as massage therapy certification, programs for massage therapist certification may be anywhere from 300 – 1,500 class hours. Natural health diplomas and/or degrees may also be attained but with additional education, training and comprehensive coursework.

Natural healing schools may offer distance learning or online learning programs, in addition to traditional in-class coursework

Reflexology Schools

Training students in reflexology therapy, reflexology schools base their instruction and curriculum on an ancient art and science involving zones of the feet and hands. Reflexology schools teach students how to identify corresponding regions of these zones with relation to particular bodily systems; and how to accurately facilitate pressure points to relieve or reduce health problems.

Students who attend reflexology schools can expect to get training in how to reduce stress with specific finger, hand and thumb pressure techniques. In addition, reflexology students will learn more specifically, how real physiological improvements can be created through the precision application of reflexology.

While some states require massage licensing for reflexology school graduates, most do not; therefore, depending on individual schools and curriculums, licenses may or may not be required upon completion.

Some students may choose to earn a certificate in reflexology. Most reflexology schools that offer certificate programming may include curriculum and training regarding foot, hand and ear reflexology basics and techniques; theoretical approaches to reflexology; concept of meridians; proper alignment exercises; leg and foot anatomy; and many other relative educational programs.

Naturopathic Schools

To become a licensed naturopathic physician, student must attend a four year graduate level naturopathic school and must be educated in similar sciences of that of a medical doctor. In addition, naturopathic school students will study about holistic and noninvasive health approaches to disease prevention, and wellness optimization.

Naturopathic school students will usually attain a standard medical curriculum as well as four additional years of training in various natural healing modalities including acupuncture, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, counseling, homeopathy and even psychology.

In addition to physically attending naturopathic schools, students may also opt to enroll in online educational programs that may offer training for various health certifications. Currently, there are a few accredited naturopathic schools that offer diversified educational programs that include clinical training, degree and non-degree programs.

For individuals wishing to simply learn about naturopathy, a non-degree program may be an option. Curriculum pertaining to non-degree programs may include an overview of medicinal plants, introduction to homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and theories in relation to naturopathic medicine.

Students, who are seriously thinking about achieving a degree in naturopathic medicine, may opt to enroll in a degree program at a naturopathic school. Degree programs may include, but are not limited to a curriculum involving a four year, in-depth course in with comprehensive education and training in natural therapies and preventive medicine. Naturopathic school students who complete these degree programs successfully are often awarded a doctorate in naturopathic medicine and go on to becoming primary care physicians with an emphasis on natural and preventive medicine.

CAD School

A CAD school will teach you the basics and guide you through the features of CAD software, but it will not necessarily enhance your design abilities.

CAD schools will normally provide you with a CAD Primer. This describes what CAD is, what it can do for you, and how it is best used; introduces hundreds of common terms used in CAD; illustrates the concepts of working with CAD using a number of exercises; and introduces a number of advanced techniques and shortcut methods used by professionals. It may also contain a comprehensive listing of leading CAD programs and important CAD resources on the Internet.

Learning CAD is not limited to adults; even kids these days can learn with the more user-friendly interfaces these software manufacturers have employed in their systems, which were once quite complicated. In CAD, it is not always the knowledge of technique that gets you through a project but paying attention to pragmatic design and details.

You can locate CAD Schools anywhere around a city, but most architectural and engineering schools include a course in Computer–Aided Design in their curriculum. Most collegiate curriculums in Design revolve around CAD software. These software programs provide them a “For Education Version” in which students can to learn with the aide of an instructor.

Each of these computer-aided design schools will teach the latest techniques and utilize the newest software available according to the software provider, and each will teach a different style in a different approach. It is suggested that a concerned student ask for information from several of these computer-aided design schools to find the right program for his or her style of learning. Information is available at no cost from these CAD training schools

Massage Therapy Schools for Natural Healing

Searching for massage therapy schools? With hundreds of holistic schools providing massage therapy education across the United States and in Canada (in addition to community, technical colleges and universities), massage therapy schools offer hands-on training in over 200 diverse massage modalities.

Because it is a regulated health profession, accredited massage therapy schools offer an extensive and in-depth, standard educational program that encompasses anatomy, physiology, bodywork techniques, patient assessment, and pathology.

Medical Transcription School - How Long Will It Take

Facing the unknown can often be disconcerting, especially when you want very much to find a great home-based career, like medical transcription. "How long will it take to get through the school?" And, "How long until I get my first paycheck?" are common concerns asked by people considering a career in medical transcription. Here we'll address both these issues.

First things first - How long will it take? On average you can expect to get through a good medical transcription school in about nine to twelve months. This assumes that you work on it consistently and part-time. All together, it will take about 600-700 hours. Say you work at it three hours a day, five days a week - that's 15 hours a week. Divide that into 600, and you get 40 weeks -- which is about nine and a half months. If you consistently work at it just a half hour longer each day, it'll shave more than a month off that.

Obviously, that's a great deal of time away from home -- usually the very thing people searching for a new career often don't want to leave behind. Fortunately, the best medical transcription schools allow you to work at home at your own pace.

So, when can I get my first check? The thing to remember is that the more time you are willing to dedicate to your studies, the sooner you will be able to start working from home and get that first check! After all, that is really what it is all about, isn’t it?

Regardless of your current situation, you should be able to get through a quality medical transcription school working a few hours a day, and as many days per week that you are able dedicate to the program. A good medical transcription school will guide you through the process systematically — step by step. With a moderate amount of effort and dedication you will quickly gain the confidence you need to complete the program. So, find the best medical transcription school you can, and launch your future career today!

Bright Future For Those Who Train In Horseshoeing Or Gunsmithing

Horseshoeing and gunsmithing – the very names conjure up images from the past, visions of cowboys and outlaws in the Wild West. But the surprising reality of these near-forgotten trades is not simply that they still exist in today’s world, but that skilled practitioners are in high demand, able to set up businesses of their own, and often able to pick and choose their clientele.

The reality of being a farrier – someone who shoes horses – is far different from the image of a grizzled blacksmith shoeing horses in the middle of a desert town. A modern farrier is well equipped, well trained and often able to set up his or her own business. Farriers today work with racehorses, show horses and work horses. People who own farms or riding stables, those who ride professionally or as a hobby – they’re all bound by one thing – the love of horses. A good farrier is essential to the well-being of a horse, and a well-trained farrier knows how to analyze the shape of a horse’s hoof and check for problems. Different horses require different shoes, depending on their routines, and a farrier who knows the right shoe and schedule for each horse is worth his weight in gold.

Gunsmiths today are also a far cry from the way they are often pictured. Guns are increasingly complicated machines, and it requires knowledge and training to help maintain, design and repair guns for sportsmen, the military or the police. Both the military and state, local and federal police forces require gunsmiths to make sure equipment is in working order. But perhaps the real appeal in gunsmithing is working with and for the sportsman – the hunter or gun collector. These sportsmen often have large collections of different types of guns requiring maintenance and, in the case of older, historical guns, careful restoration.

The allure of both gunsmithing and horseshoeing as a trade is multi-faceted. In both, people get to work with something they love, with and for people who share their same passions. And in both careers, there is the very real benefit of being able to set up your own business – being able to choose your own clientele, set your own hours, and do something you really love. Working for yourself isn’t always easy. There is a lot of responsibility, and you have to make sure your business plan is solid and you are able to face the challenges ahead. But for those who decide to go for it, few things are more rewarding than being their own boss and having the satisfaction that comes from running and owning their own business.

Building Self-Confidence at Work - 5 Things You Can Do

Self-confidence is definitely a trait worth cultivating at work. Self-confidence helps you to project an aura of confidence that makes others trust in your abilities to complete a job successfully.

However, many people are not fully secure about their abilities around their job. Here’s a secret – the self-confident people often aren’t either! The difference is that they pretend that they can do something, even if they are not sure how when they start out, knowing that 9 times out of 10 they will figure things out along the way.

If you’re looking for increased self-confidence in performing at work, dealing with coworkers, and handling tough situations, you're not alone. So what can you do to feel more self-assured about your job?

1. It’s OK To Make Mistakes

Firstly, remember that you are not your job. So if you make a mistake at work, this does not mean that you are stupid, worthless, or that you're in the wrong job. It's easy to take mistakes personally, seeing them as a reflection of your true person rather than for what it is: - just a mistake.

Even the super self-confident people and ‘stars’ make mistakes from time to time. They know that this is inevitable and just deal with it and move on. An often unrecognised benefit of mistakes is that they give us great learning opportunities.

If you make a mistake, the best way to deal with it is to own up to it right away and present a solution. This shows that you are trustworthy, and by presenting ways to fix the problem, you demonstrate your creativity and your boss can have confidence in your ability to deal with the issue.

Acting honestly and straightforwardly is always the best policy. You will be pleasantly surprised how willing most people are to help. Engaging with other people and accepting their help will build better working relationships and you'll feel better about yourself. Its also going to create the best outcome for the company, which again will help you feel better.

2. Getting On With Co-workers

Another common self-confidence issue is feeling insecure when it comes to co-workers. Many people feel that they do not fit in, are unsure how to handle conflict, or have an overbearing co-worker or boss that they don't know how to communicate with. Any of these feelings can wear at your self-esteem.

If your self-confidence is low, you may feel you have nothing to offer your work colleagues, socially or on projects. This might mean that in order to avoid conflict, you allow others to step on you.

If socialization is difficult for you, it does require you to step out of your comfort zone a bit. This does not mean you need to jump straight into being a social star, rather just make a point of opening conversations with one or two co-workers at social gatherings. Chances are you'll find you have something in common to talk about. Asking questions about the other person is always a great way to go. Ask “open” questions that invite the other person to talk. These questions often begin with a phrase like “What do you think about . . . “ or “How did you . . .” instead of questions that invite simple yes or no answers.

3. Conflict Resolution

It is not pleasant having to deal with conflict and with difficult people, but communication skills certainly make the task easier. There are proven communication techniques you can learn to help with this. If you are in a supervisory or managerial position, it is worthwhile attending a course specifically on conflict resolution and dealing with difficult people.

In general, remember that an overbearing person probably has a lot of insecurities as well, and hides behind their overbearing exterior. In the midst of conflict, do your best to avoid being pulled into argumentative situations. Don't reward the other person's behavior by getting upset or immediately backing down. If necessary, say you'll continue the conversation when everyone has had a chance to cool down. Dealing with negative co-workers is never fun. Try and remember that your self worth is not dependent on your co-worker's approval, even if that person is your boss.

4. Upgrade Your Skills

Learning is a lifelong process and my advice is if in doubt, the solution is probably to learn more. If you're feeling unsure about your skills, it’s probably time to go back to class.

Many companies offer continuing education options and will gladly pay for schooling, or offer professional development in house, because they know it makes you more valuable and productive for them.

Whatever your employer offers in the way of education and training, take advantage of it. If your company does not offer training, educate yourself by reading good books on the subject. Ask your colleagues for suggestions, or if you're a member of any type of professional group, seek advice there as well. Many of your peers will have good suggestions on what's worth looking into.

5. Take On New Challenges

Finally, regularly give yourself new challenges. One great way to build your self confidence at work is to take on a special project. Especially if you are able to choose something you feel passionate about or something in your specialty area, you will be able to demonstrate to yourself and your colleagues that you are able to produce results.

To take on a new challenge demonstrates initiative and willingness to be part of special projects. What better confidence booster could you ask for, than to know that you put yourself out there and didn't sit on the sidelines

Questions to Ask a Computer Repair School Before You Put Down your Money

Most people realize that getting good training from a computer repair school for a task is a smart thing to do. Choosing a computer repair school that gives you bad training on the other hand can lead to much frustration. Avoiding a negative experience comes down to asking the right questions.

How long have you been in business? This is the first question to ask. You don't want to be a guinea pig for a school. If this is the first or second year of operating for them, keep looking. I know someone has to be first and you are probably going to get a lower tuition rate but it isn't usually worth the risk. Running a training school isn't for the faint of heart. There are lots of lessons to be learned. Why let them learn those lessons on you?

How many people in the program I'm planning to take have found jobs in the last year? A good computer repair school will be happy to provide you with numbers. Even better is if they are willing to provide you with references including names and phone numbers. Unless you plan on opening your own business, knowing there will be a job for you at the end of your training is important. Don't overlook this part of your research. If they give you names to call, call them. While you have these references on the phone, ask them about the school. What they liked and what they didn't like. Better yet, ask them whether the training they received from the school was worth the price they paid for their training.

How much real life experience do my teachers have in the field? You don't want to get theory only. You need some practical advice to go along with that theory. Sometimes, you may find their practical advice being worth a lot more than their theoretical knowledge.

Why should I enroll in your course of study over another training company's program? Asking this question can help you identify the particular strengths of the training school you're examining. Keep in mind though that the answer to this question will usually be a sales pitch. Do some outside research to verify any information the school gives you.

Computer Training - Finding A School

You've made up your mind that you're going to attend a school and get some kind of computer training, whether it be computer programming, web design, networking, computer repair, or even just data entry. The question is, what school do you go to? How do you even go about picking a school? What should you look for in a school? How can you tell a good school from a bad one? The last question is sometimes the hardest one to answer but hopefully, by the time you're done reading this, you'll have a good idea of what to be on the lookout for.

The first thing you will notice about any school is how much it costs to go there. The price ranges, depending on the course of study, can be all over the map. Some schools can charge as much as $5,000, like the famous Chubb Institute for one of their programs. Other schools may be as cheap as $1500 for the same program. Does that mean Chubb is better or are they just overpriced and you're paying for the name?

Fortunately, in most cases, you get what you pay for. Chubb has a reputation of having the best instructors to go along with the best programs and that's the first thing you look at, the school's reputation. Dig up all you can about the school. Ask people in the community. Visit message boards. Do as much research as you can before making your decision. Of course, there is going to be good and bad said about everything, but the good should outweigh the bad if the school is top notch.

The next thing you have to do is see if the school itself will satisfy your needs as a student. You may not know what those needs are so here is a short list.

For starters, you want to make sure that the tuition includes all books and supplies. You don't want to sign up for a course that costs $5,000 and find out that books and lab time are extra. Get all the costs right up front when you visit the enrolment office.

The next thing you want to ask is if the instructors themselves are certified by the state. Unfortunately, because most computer schools are private schools, state certification is not required. This doesn't mean the instructors are not qualified but it does leave room for doubt. If the school hires anybody off the street who just happens to say he can teach, you could be in for a very unpleasant experience.

After that, you need to ask about lab time. In most computer courses, there is a lot of hands on work. You need to make sure that you will have access to the lab during hours that you can attend. The last thing you want is to find out that lab hours are from 2 to 4 each day and you have a part time job during those hours. Ideally, you want a lab that's open all day and night. Many schools will have this option.

Finally, you want to ask about job placement services. This is probably the most crucial area of any school. No matter how good the training, it is difficult to land that first job without a good placement center that has access to major companies. This is where a school like Chubb has a big advantage over many schools as Chubb is a company by itself and they hire many of their own students if they are qualified.

By looking at the above things when choosing a school, you have an excellent chance of finding a computer school that is just right for you.

What You Need To Know Before Committing To Vocational Retraining

You’ve thought a lot about the kind of work you want to do. The duties, the pay, the hours, the environment – everything sounds right. According to the newspaper ads, there is a big demand out there. You find a program that sounds really good. You are all ready to sign on the dotted line.

Stop! Before you invest your time, your energy, and a good chunk of your money in this direction, ask some tough questions.

1. Request that the school provide you with placement statistics – these are required by the state for all approved vocational courses. Statistics can be misleading so ask for details – what kind of job did the graduates find, how much did it pay, how long did it take them to find it?

2. Ask for the names and telephone numbers of 6 recent graduates you can contact for feedback. Good schools often have recent graduates visiting on site to share their experiences with current students. If the school refuses to provide such a list, or cannot provide it for whatever reason they give you, red flags should be immediately raised.

3. Is State Licensure or Certification required for this field? If so, what is the school’s passing rate? What is the examination’s pass rate overall? How do they compare?

4. Arrange to audit one or two classes. Evaluate the instructor and the program organization. Talk to the other students about their experience.

5. Visit the placement office and find out what services and support are offered. At a minimum, you should receive a professional resume and multiple job leads. An excellent school will also provide interviewing skill training and employer background information. Find out if the school works consistently with several local employers which indicates that their graduates have been positive hires in the past.

6. Sit down with the Sunday Classifieds and circle employers in the field. Then call them for information. Are new graduates considered or is actual work experience required? Is the school known in the business community and what kind of reputation does it have? Has this company ever hired a graduate of this school? How would the employer recommend that someone enter this field?

If the school comes through with flying colors, move ahead with the knowledge that obtaining a first job after training is always difficult but you have some sources of support.

If your questions have revealed weaknesses in the program, evaluate other schools or consider selecting a different career goal.

Chef Training: Your Ticket To Endless Possibilities

Let’s face it: cooking is not an easy thing. But then, it is not that complicated either. With the right stuff and the right training, you can head off boasting like a chef that knows its craft.

Hence, whenever somebody has taken good cooking knowledge and skills, we would normally call them chefs. They are, in reality, what the king is to his throne. This means that the chefs are considered to be the highest class of cook with utmost ability and proficiency.

All of these things are not easily achieved. Before they can be acclaimed as chefs, they have to undergo first a rigid and thorough chef training. There are lots of skills to be learned and lots of things to be known in a chef training. Probably, this is the reason why people have high regard on them because of all the trouble they went through.

The Qualifications

In most instances, you don’t need to be a high school graduate just to get hold of the opportunity in attending chef training programs. Though, you might want to be a high school graduate, at the least, because what you know as a high school graduate can be very handy when attending the chef training already, especially if it involves something about mathematics and the skill on managing a business.

Basically, chef training are sponsored by hotels and restaurants. This is because in most case, restaurants and hotels would rather obtain chefs that had personally undergone with their chef training.

The Concept

When you start out as a short order cook or a fast food cook, do not think that you will never have the chance of advancing to the next level. All you have to do is to take vigorous and rigid chef training so as to acquire the needed skills on the advance level.

With chef training, students are trained in “apprenticeship program” being offered by most professional schools, hotels, and other food and beverage businesses. One of which is the 3-year apprenticeship program managed by the local divisions of the American Culinary Federation.

Likewise, there are hotels and restaurants that offer chef training also. The best thing about it is that you are most likely hired by the same company after you have finished your chef training. Most restaurants and hotel management find these arrangements very feasible since they will no longer have to go to a tedious manner of posting for job applications, screenings, and hiring applicants.

Besides, you would also require your hired chefs to still undergo additional chef training so that they will fit to your standards. That would be a double cost of expenses for you.

The Skills

Generally, chef training are not just any ordinary cooking lessons that one may learn. This refers to the most advanced level of what every cook may achieve.

In chef training, you not only learn more techniques in cooking but you are already trained in the supervisory and managerial level. This is because you are expected to handle a group of cooks once you get hold of the edge in chef training. In fact, you are not only expected to acquire new skills after finishing chef training but you are also expected to manage your own restaurant or hotel as well.

The Endless Possibilities

Indeed, after finishing chef training, the endless possibility of earning a good living is at hand.

In reality, chefs are very in demand these days. With a growing trend in fast food businesses and restaurants, it is no doubt that you can have a proliferating career once you have finished attending chef training. You have the chance and the opportunity to get hired locally or internationally.

Employment growth in chefs are imminent, especially now that the whole populace is constantly growing, therefore, more people will need the chef’s service.

So, for those who want to be a chef or simply those who knows how to cook and wants to know more ways on how to get a good job, it is best that you attend chef training. It doesn’t just gives you the proper knowledge on cooking and advanced cooking but also maximizes your potential in handling your very own cooking business.

Certainly, chef training is your ticket to endless possibilities of living a good life.

Area of Focus

Look into the nature of the school. Is it solely a fashion design school or does it offer other courses. Is this school well-known for its emphasis on fashion design?

Fashion design schools are few and far between. This makes it harder to choose one that fits your bill. Your first task will be to find a reputable school that will aid you in your training.

Also, look into whether the school participates in any fashion design competition or has accomplished anything of reknown in the industry. This is a sure sign of their commitment to the fashion arts its education among students.

Different schools have different strengths, find a school that plays to your strengths and has specialization in the field of your choice.

For example, you might choose a very well-know fashion design school only to find out that they specialize in childrens’ clothing, while the field of your choice is adult formal wear. This could diffuse your interests, and dull your specialization.

Make sure you know what field the school you are scouting focuses on. This will help you specialize in that area too.

Alumni and Job Placements

Does the college offer job placement assistance? And has the alumni from this school gone on to be successful professionals? Always learn from other’s previous experience. If you see that those that had gone through this school before you received proper training and are successful in their field, that is an indication of a good school.

Most of these reputable schools have numerous connections in the graphic arts industry. They usually offer job placement services. You may want to consider this when choosing a school.

It would do no harm to start looking at the educational background of your admired fashion designer. Checking out the schools they came from will give an idea of the sort of training these artists went through. From here, you may make decisions as to whether you would like to choose the same school as they did.

Curriculum

You must assess whether the curriculum is relevant to you field of study. You may want to compare the curricula of different schools to see which offers the best form of education.

It would also be wise to check the quality of the teaching staff at that school. Having established artists who teach at a fashion design school is also an indication of a good training program.

Student to Teacher Ratio

Ask yourself: how big are the classes and how many teachers and classes are available at this school before you choose it. The more the students the lesser the efficacy of the teacher. However, if there are too few students per teacher, that could tell of a different problem – that of quality. If this is the case, it may be that the school is not popular or is suffering from anemic academic performance.

Accreditation

Accreditation means the school has passed a certain standards of educational quality. Accreditation is performed by the U.S. Department of Education. Fashion design schools must be accredited to prove their level of competence.

Check with the State Postsecondary School Licensing Bureau to see if the college you are investigating is accredited. Also, check National Approval and Accreditation for this concern.

Cost

Some people may proclaim that to obtain their education, they would spare no coin. Unfortunately, it also pays to be practical in your choice of fashion design school. If the school you choose has a tuition rate that is beyond your financial capability, you might find yourself working unable to pursue your studies consistently due to the financial stress which may lead you to look for part-time work.

Scholarships

You might want to consider whether the design school you are looking at offers any scholarships. You also might want to know the terms to them too. Some schools offer scholarships based on academic performance. Some offer them based on fashion design competitions they hold regularly.

Your choice of school is an investment that will last you a lifetime. Proper care and investigation in choosing such is truly important. When you are comfortable with your choice of fashion design schools, you can now chart your path towards a successful career.

What You Need to Know About Accredited Correspondence Schools

Accredited correspondence schools are learning institutions that have been evaluated by an accrediting organization for standards, guidelines and policies relating to academic quality.

Looking to make sure a school is accredited is extremely important before enrolling in any of its distance learning programs. There are some “Diploma mills” that provide degrees not even worth the paper they're printed on, and these are generally correspondence schools, sometimes with only a PO Box as an address.

In other words, the primary concern with diploma mills is that the degree, certification or credential that they provide to the student for a sometimes large fee will not be accepted by employers, state licensing agencies or even by other schools if transfer of credit is attempted. By attending accredited correspondence schools, you avoid the risk of paying for a worthless diploma.

If you are attempting to obtain federal grants or loans for tuition expenses, it is essential to look for accredited correspondence schools. This is true for some state financial aid programs as well. Employer tuition reimbursement programs usually require that the school be accredited. In order to obtain a state license in some professional fields, school accreditation is required. It is always safest to enroll in accredited correspondence schools or educational programs.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) provides accreditation information on colleges and universities and on accrediting organizations. Seventeen of these accrediting organizations review distance learning schools. The CHEA recommends that you contact the administrators of the facility you are considering and ask for their accreditation credentials; date accreditation received, date of last review, name of accrediting organization, etc.

If it is not one of the accredited correspondence schools, the CHEA recommends that you ask about the transferability of credits and courses to other colleges or universities and the acceptance of credits and courses by licensing bodies and employers.

There are sometimes explanations for a lack of accreditation, since the accreditation process is a lengthy one, so it may not be necessary to rule out a school that is not one of the accredited correspondence schools listed by the CHEA or another accrediting organization, but be certain to obtain references from previous students, faculty, employers in your field or state licensing boards.

Choosing Nursing Review Centers

Selecting the best review center is like choosing the best answer in a board exam question. Almost all choices appear to be correct but only one is the best answer. So how exactly does one arrive at the best decision? Use the nursing process!

Step 1 - ASSESSMENT

Listen to the presentation of each review center. Your school will normally schedule a date where review centers are given equal opportunities to make a sales pitch. Take down notes. Make a list of the good points of each review center. This will help you narrow down your choices.

Ask questions. Find out the track record of review centers as shown by their passing rate in past board examinations. Inquire as to the number of review hours and the kind of materials they use in their review. Scrutinize their roster of lecturers.

Visit the actual review site. The environment should be conducive for learning. Classroom size is important as well as the number of reviewees per class. The relationship of reviewees should be inversely proportional to the classroom size. This means bigger classrooms with fewer reviewees is better. Facilities such as library, audio-video equipment, and computers are major considerations too.

Examine the packages being offered by each review center and its corresponding costs.

Ask people you know about their experience with each review center.

Step 2 - ANALYSIS / DIAGNOSIS

Make a decision based on the information you have gathered. Your decision should be based on YOUR own review needs as assessed by you and NOT by the choice of your friends or anyone else.

Step 3 - PLANNING / GOAL SETTING

Planning is key. Set review goals. Most review centers conduct diagnostic exams on the first few days of formal review to assess your areas of weakness. Use this as your gauge for evaluating the effectiveness of the review program you enrolled with.

Most review centers' review program are divided in phases. Find out if you can enlist for the first phase of review only. This is to avoid being tied up with the review center should you feel that the review program and approach is not effective for you.

Step 4 - IMPLEMENTATION / INTERVENTION

This is mostly on you. Make sure you adhere to your review program and do your part. Learning is not one way. No review center will be good enough and a good review program will be ineffective and futile if you don't study.

Step 5 - EVALUATION

When the first phase of the review is complete, most often than not, the review center will conduct post-test assessment. This will be a good indicator if the review program is effective. If you feel that you have done your part and yet the review program is insufficient, then try to venture into other review centers.

At the end of the day, it is NOT the review centers that will ensure your success in the board examination. It is your OWN perseverance, discipline, and hardwork that will determine your success in your quest to become a professional nurse endowed with knowledge, skills, and the right attitude
